Two models of a rotationally asymmetric multifocal IOL restored distance vision and improved near and intermediate vision, a study found.

Investigators tested the Lentis Mplus LS-312 MF15 and Lentis Mplus LS-312 MF30 IOLs (Oculentis). The Mplus LS-312 MF15 has a near addition of 1.50 D, while the MF30 model has a near addition of 3 D.

"This IOL may be a good option for patients with significant intermediate vision demands, such as those who drive at night," the study authors said.

The prospective, nonrandomized study included 43 eyes of 26 patients ranging in age from 55 years to 83 years. Twenty-two eyes of 13 patients received the Mplus LS-312 MF15 lens; 21 eyes of 13 patients received the Mplus LS-312 MF30 lens.

Near, intermediate and distance visual acuity were evaluated preoperatively and at 1 day and 1, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Target refraction was approximately -0.25 D in both groups.

Study results showed statistically significant improvement in uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity and corrected near distance visual acuity in both groups (P ≤ .01). The 3 D add group had significantly better uncorrected and distance-corrected near visual acuity (P ≤ .01). The 1.5 D add group had better uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (P = .01).

Between-group differences in uncorrected near visual acuity and corrected near visual acuity were statistically significant.

Results showed insignificant between-group differences in postoperative contrast sensitivity, patient satisfaction, optical quality and ocular aberrometry, the authors said.
