ROP severity not associated with pituitary-adrenal response

The severity of retinopathy of prematurity is not associated with early endogenous or stimulated pituitary-adrenal responses, a prospective study found.

Pak Cheung Ng and colleagues at the Chinese University of Hong Kong studied the relationship between ROP and pituitary-adrenal responses in 92 very low birthweight infants with a gestation period of less than 30 weeks.

The study found that early endogenous or stimulated pituitary-adrenal responses are not independent risk factors associated with severe ROP. The two factors most associated with development of severe ROP were birthweight (P < .0001) and oxygen dependency (P < .0001) at 28 days of life or at 36 weeks gestational age.

The study is published in the January issue of Pediatric Research.
