RNFL thickness decreases with DR severity
The retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in patients with type 2 diabetes significantly decreases with the severity of diabetic retinopathy, according to a study.
Hirokazu Takahashi, MD, and colleagues analyzed data from 128 subjects with type 2 diabetes and 50 age-matched subjects without glaucoma or glaucoma-suspect. All participants underwent imaging with slit lamp perimetry (GDx) and repeatable automated perimetry.
Patients with diabetes had significantly reduced retinal nerve fiber layers (RNFL) compared with the age-matched controls. “Moreover, all RNFL thickness parameters of the GDx VCC software decreased significantly as an exacerbation of diabetic retinopathy,” the researchers said. Nerve fiber indicators also increased significantly, “despite an absence of glaucomatous optic nerve damages,” they said.
The study is published in the July issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology.
