RNFL measurements comparable for time-domain, spectral-domain OCT

Comparable retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measurements and a strong structure-function association were found for time-domain and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, according to a study of patients with glaucoma.
The prospective, cross-sectional study included 54 eyes with open-angle glaucoma and 22 healthy control eyes. A second-order regression model was employed in evaluating the association between visual field sensitivity and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness as determined by Cirrus spectral-domain and Stratus time-domain OCT (both Carl Zeiss Meditec).
A significant correlation in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness was found for the two OCT devices (P < .001). The highest coefficient of determination was in the inferotemporal retinal nerve fiber layer sector; the highest visual field sensitivity was found in the superotemporal test point.
"The results of this study show that Cirrus RNFL measurements correlate well with those from Stratus OCT, with comparable strength of the structure-function association between Cirrus HD-OCT and Stratus OCT. ... Further longitudinal studies will be needed to determine the applicability of using the structure-function association to describe glaucoma progression," the study authors said.
