Glaucoma patients are most concerned about the risk of vision loss from their disease and less concerned about risks related to treating the disease, a interview-based study found.

Jonathan S. Bhargava and colleagues at Queen's Medical Centre and the University of Nottingham, England, asked 82 glaucoma patients to rank the importance of 10 hypothetical risk scenarios.

Using conjoint analysis, the researchers found that the risk of moderate visual impairment had a 38% importance, and the risk of long-term blindness had a 27% importance. Respondents ranked the possibility of trabeculectomy at 15% and the risk of visual deterioration following trabeculectomy at 9%. The use of topical medication had an importance of 11%, according to the study.

The study was published in the July issue of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science.
