SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Risk factors for secondary glaucoma after keratoplasty include keratoconus, corneal dystrophy, herpetic keratopathy, corneal perforation, bullous keratopathy and traumatic keratopathy, said one surgeon speaking here.

Alfonso Arias Puente, MD, presented his findings here at the Pan-American Congress of Ophthalmology. He and colleagues evaluated 174 patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty and subsequently developed secondary glaucoma. In his study, the overall incidence for glaucoma was 25.28%, he said.

Additional risk factors included IOL implantation or removal, Dr. Arias Puente added.
