Menicon Z rigid gas-permeable contact lenses can be worn safely for at least 22 days with no incidence of microbial keratitis, according to a study.

"On the basis of this study, [continuous wear] of the Menicon Z hyper-Dk/t RGP lens provides a safe and full-time vision correction alternative for patients who can adapt to RGP lens wear," the post-market surveillance study said.

There were no findings of microbial keratitis during the 24-month study, and reported rates of complications were low.

Subjects were contacted at 6-month intervals for up to 24 months to determine typical wearing schedules, continuance of wear and any signs of infection.

By the end of the study, 173 of the 507 participants had discontinued participation, most frequently due to wearing the lenses for less than 22 days. However, 1,275 of the 1,527 contacts included in the study resulted in continuous wearing times of 22 days or more.

Wearing time data for discontinued subjects were still included in the wearing time analysis, the study said.
