Retinopathy varies with age of diabetes onset, study finds
LINKOPING, Sweden The prevalence of retinopathy is related to the age of onset of type 1 diabetes, according to a population-based study here. The study also found that glycemic control affects the prevalence of retinopathy in patients with type 1 diabetes.
The Vascular complications in Southeast Sweden (VISS) study is a population-based study that includes all 440 patients with type 1 diabetes onset before the age of 36 in a defined geographical area. Fundus photographs of 390 patients were analyzed; in 277, no retinopathy was found.
The prevalence of retinopathy increased from 11% among patients who were younger than 5 years old at diabetes onset to 48% among those who were 15 to 19 years old at diabetes onset, and then decreased to 30% for patients who were between 30 and 35 years old at onset.
The study is published in the November issue of Diabetic Medicine.
