Retina replacement prototype 'not far off'

More than 4,000 attendees flocked to Nuremburg, Germany, for the country's annual ophthalmologists' meeting.

NUREMBURG, Germany — Implantation of a prototype artificial retina in human eyes is not far off, according to P. Walter, MD, of Cologne, Germany. Animal models have demonstrated stimulation of the visual cortex and "give hope that successful, long-term stimulation is going to be possible in humans," Dr. Walter said during the meeting of the Deutschen Ophthalmochirugen, held here.

Dr. Walter has been conducting research in this area since 1995. He said a prototype retina would be useful in research, but that clinical application is five to 10 years away.

Further minimization of the silicone wafer circuit and biocompatibility of the capsule within which the circuit is contained are two issues central to the success of this ultra-high technology, he said.
