Refractive lens exchange viable option for high myopia, cataract combo

TRIESTE, Italy — Refractive lens exchange can be regarded as a viable option for the correction of high myopia associated with cataract, according to a study.

Giuseppe Ravalico, MD, and colleagues here with University Eye Clinic retrospectively reviewed the charts of 388 eyes that underwent cataract extraction and IOL implantation between 1986 and 1999. All IOLs were less than 11 D in power. Phacoemulsification was performed in 237 eyes, extracapsular cataract extraction was performed in 147 eyes, and intracapsular cataract extraction was performed in four eyes.

Mean refraction was –15.95 D preoperatively and –2 D postoperatively. Of the 127 eyes having an Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification, one developed a macular retinal hole. Posterior detachment of the vitreous occurred in 78.6% of the cases.

The study is published in the January issue of Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
