Refractive lens exchange (RLE) corrects myopia associated with early-stage keratoconus, according to a study.

Antonio Leccisotti, MD, PhD, and colleagues in Siena, Italy, reviewed 34 consecutive eyes of 20 patients with stage 1 to 2 keratoconus. Surgery was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of RLE for the correction of spherical error. If a spherical error greater than 1.5 D was found, the IOL power was immediately exchanged.

The article indicated that intraoperative autorefractometry is recommended because IOL power calculation by ultrasound biometry can be inaccurate in almost one third of eyes.

According to researchers, the use of more advanced biometric techniques, as well as toric IOLs, are required to improve predictability and reduce final defocus equivalent.

The study is published in the May issue of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
