Refined carbohydrate intake does not affect cataract formation, study finds

A high dietary glycemic load does not increase the risk of cataract formation, a group of epidemiological researchers said.
Debra Schaumberg and colleagues at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston studied two large cohorts of patients to determine the rate of incident age-related cataract. The cohorts included 71,919 women followed for 14 years and 39,926 men followed for 12 years who had no previous diagnosis of cataract, diabetes or cancer. Subjects were at least 45 years old.
The researchers confirmed 4,865 incident age-related cataract extractions in the two groups. After adjustments for numerous risk factors, they found no significant relation between dietary glycemic load and risk of cataract extraction.
The study is published in the August issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
