Recommendations announced from the Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Workshop
BOSTON The Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society announced the results from the International Workshop on Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), according to a press release from the organization.
The workshop had the goal of evaluating the structure of the meibomian gland and its role in eye health and disease. Gary N. Foulks, MD, FACS, vice chair of the MGD Workshop Steering Committee, said the workshop created a more contemporary definition and classification for meibomian gland dysfunction.
"Furthermore, we developed recommendations for the diagnosis, evaluation and grading of severity of MGD, the management and therapy of this disease, as well as norms of clinical trial design to evaluate pharmaceutical interventions for MGD treatment," Dr. Foulks said in the release.
The report, which took more than 2 years to complete, incorporates the knowledge of more than 50 international research experts. It was published in a special issue of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.
