Randy Johnston, MD, takes office as new AAO president

SAN FRANCISCO — Randy Johnston, MD, has assumed the presidency of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the organization announced in a press release. Dr. Johnston officially accepted the post on Jan. 1, succeeding outgoing president Michael W. Brennan, MD.

"This is a crucial time for ophthalmology, both in terms of opportunities and challenges," Dr. Johnston said in the release. "I am looking forward to working on the issues that are of critical importance to our members now."

Dr. Johnston has served on the AAO's board of trustees since 2000. During his tenure with the AAO, Dr. Johnston has represented the AAO's council and committee on state governmental affairs and served as chairman of the AAO's OPHTHPAC committee. In addition, Dr. Johnston coordinated Eye MD for the AAO's laser surgery initiative and served on the regional roundup organizing committee, according to the release.

Most recently, Dr. Johnston served as senior secretary for advocacy.

Currently, Dr. Johnston is in private practice in Cheyenne, Wyo., as a vitreoretinal specialist. He is also a consultant for the Cheyenne VA Medical Center.
