Nonablative radiofrequency therapy may reduce wrinkles in the periorbital and midface regions without significant complications, a study found.

The study included 32 patients aged 29 to 71 years who underwent eight weekly treatment sessions with a 4-MHz radiofrequency wand. Patients were treated on the periorbital, frontal and midface regions.

The Fitzpatrick Wrinkle Classification system was used to determine wrinkle severity before and after treatment. Three independent observers noted progressive improvements in wrinkle score at 1, 3 and 6 months (P < .01), according to the study.

Patients also reported improved satisfaction on a 9-point rating scale (P < .01).

Temporary erythema, which lasted from a few hours to 1 day, was noted in 62.5% of patients.

"We advocate extreme caution and further study of [radiofrequency] treatment in the eyelid area, due to the unknown potential hazards of energy penetration to the globe or cornea from periocular application of large electrodes over the thin eyelid structure," the authors said.
