Lt. Gov. Roberts told the audience that they should not give up in their efforts to balance life and work and stressed the need to reach out to youth, saying that young people should be shown that "you can have a relatively normal life and a challenging career."

Agenda topics for the WIO Summer Symposium included balancing life and work, managing stress and change, communicating with industry, speed networking and practice management issues, such as market trends in ophthalmology, financial benchmarking and ethics considerations.

Lt. Gov. Roberts served five terms in the Rhode Island State Senate before becoming lieutenant governor. She is an advocate and author of legislation for health care reform and has served as chairwoman of the state's Senate Health and Human Services Committee.

Lt. Gov. Roberts advised the audience to embrace changes in technology, which she said would ultimately "change the landscape of health care."

The 2009 WIO symposium is scheduled for Aug. 6 to 9 in San Diego.
