Quick quality-of-life questionnaire measures visual loss in AMD patients

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 10-question questionnaire can assist physicians in determining the full range of vision in age-related macular degeneration patients in a fast and seamless approach, according to a study.

The "quick vision-related questionnaire," or QVQ, measures AMD patients' reading, mobility and daily activities levels, according to a poster presentation here at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meeting.

Nhung Nguyen and Susanne Trauzettel-Klosinski devised the short QVQ "for routine use in a busy eye clinic."

"Results of this QVQ confirm that AMD affects many daily activities and mobility with stronger effect on reading ability at all stages," they said. "The QVQ can be used for evaluation of vision-related quality of life, especially following treatment and rehabilitation."

The researchers examined results of the questionnaire in 187 AMD patients. They found that patients with severe vision loss had the highest scores for visual impairment for reading, mobility and daily activities.

For patients who had visual acuity less than 20/200, 56% always needed help in their daily lives. Only 5% of patients who had visual acuity better than 20/200 needed assistance always.
