Unilateral presentation of proliferative diabetic retinopathy was rare in a population of patients in Iceland, suggesting the need for close follow-up of patients with single eye involvement.

In a study of 76 patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy, 28 patients were diagnosed with bilateral disease during the same examination. In addition, 28 patients developed proliferative diabetic retinopathy in the contralateral eye within 5 years of initial diagnosis.

Overall, 56 patients (74%) developed bilateral proliferative diabetic retinopathy within 5 years. According to the study, the median duration of diabetes before development of proliferative disease was 19 years for patients with type 1 disease and 14 years for type 2 disease.
