EUGENE, Ore. — An IOL with a prolate anterior surface has the potential to improve contrast sensitivity in both high and low light conditions, according to a study.

Mark Packer, MD, and colleagues here at the Oregon Eye Institute randomized patients undergoing cataract surgery to receive either the Tecnis Z9000 IOL (Pharmacia) or the AMO AR40e Opti-Edge IOL (AMO). Primary outcome measures were contrast sensitivity under both mesopic and photopic conditions using sine wave gratings.

The Tecnis Z9000 IOL provided statistically significantly better contrast sensitivity at 1.5 and 3 cycles per degree under mesopic conditions and at 6, 12 and 18 cycles per degree under photopic conditions.

The study is published in the November/December issue of Journal of Refractive Surgery.
