Pars plana vitrectomy improved visual acuity by at least two Snellen lines in a majority of patients with cystoid macular edema caused by nonischemic central retinal vein occlusion, researchers in Japan found.

Mariko Furukawa, MD, of Kami-iida First General Hospital, Nagoya, and colleagues reviewed records of 25 patients who underwent the procedure. Surgeons also performed simultaneous phacoemulsification and IOL implantation in any phakic eyes.

At baseline, patients' best corrected visual acuities averaged 0.31 and only three patients had BCVA of 20/40 or better. At 49 months' postop, BCVA improved to a mean 0.67, with 18 patients achieving 20/40 or better. BCVA remained unchanged in four patients and worsened in another four patients, according to the study authors.

The study is published in the November/December issue of the European Journal of Ophthalmology.
