Postop infection after PTK most feared complication but rare
LINKOPING, Sweden — Phototherapeutic keratectomy for the treatment of corneal disease helps to manage wound-healing problems better after recurrent erosions, according to a study.
Per Fagerholm, MD, here at University Hospital, reviewed the advances of laser treatment for corneal disease over the past 12 years. In general, he said, the introduction of phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) can help delay or postpone corneal grafting in superficial corneal dystrophies. Laser treatment has made it possible to manage wound-healing problems better after recurrent erosions as well, Dr. Fagerholm said.
Additionally, scars after surgery, such as pterygium excision, can be removed with PTK combined with conventional surgery.
