WAILEA, Hawaii — Follow-up procedures often are useful to optimize the potential of presbyopic IOLs, a speaker said here.

"Many eyes need a refractive enhancement to achieve the benefit of presby-IOLs," Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, said at Hawaiian Eye 2012. Such enhancement almost always results in happier patients, he noted, which then leads to positive word of mouth and more business.

Laser vision correction may offer a solution in cases in which IOLs have not delivered their full benefit, Dr. Lindstrom said. A study into its efficacy in improving premium IOL results pooled data from three surgeons who implant presbyopic IOLs and routinely perform laser vision correction at 3 months postop to correct residual refractive error.

The analysis examined refractive outcomes at 1 month to 3 months after the laser vision correction procedures.

The result showed that 57.6% of eyes may not receive the full experience of presbyopic IOLs with a single procedure and that laser vision correction can improve the results, Dr. Lindstrom said, suggesting additional procedures should be considered in some eyes to provide patients with the best possible results.

"Many patients need a refractive enhancement, and there are multiple alternatives in regards to how we do these refractive enhancements," Dr. Lindstrom said.
