Posterior iris fixation of iris-claw IOL shows efficacy in aphakic eyes

Using posterior iris fixation to implant an iris-claw phakic IOL can be an effective option for correcting aphakia in eyes without capsule support, according to a study by researchers in Turkey.

Mehmet Baykara, MD, and colleagues reviewed outcomes for 32 aphakic eyes in 32 consecutive patients implanted with the Artisan iris-claw IOL (Ophtec), which was inserted through a scleral tunnel incision and fixated using secondary posterior iris fixation.

At 6 months postop, mean astigmatism had decreased from –1.08 D preoperatively to –2.1 D, and spherical equivalent averaged –0.7 D. At 9 months mean follow-up, 28 eyes (87.5%) had achieved 20/40 or better best corrected visual acuity, according to the study.

No eyes experienced significant IOP increases postoperatively, the authors noted.

The study is published in the October issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology.

Advanced Medical Optics markets the Artisan IOL in the United States under the trade name Verisyse.
