Posterior capsule plaque can be predicted at slit lamp

Careful preoperative slit-lamp evaluation can help identify the presence of posterior capsule plaque before performing surgery on posterior subcapsular cataracts, a study shows.

Abhay R. Vasavada and colleagues at the Iladevi Cataract and IOL Research Centre in India conducted the study, which included 140 eyes. The researchers examined the posterior capsule preoperatively and at 1 to 7 days postop using a slit lamp at 100% oblique illumination and angled at 30° to 45°.

They found that cataract surgeons correctly predicted the presence of posterior capsule plaque in 88.6% of cases.

The study is published in the July-September issue of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology.
