THOROFARE, N.J. -- LASIK appears to be a safe and effective method of enhancement after photorefractive keratectomy in most cases, according to Carlos Lazaro, MD. But surgeons must take extra care before performing LASIK in cases in which patients have experienced significant post-PRK haze, he advises.

Patients with a haze value of grade 1 or more "have a high probability of regression after LASIK enhancement and of generating a similar amount of haze" with a loss of best corrected visual acuity, Dr. Lazaro said.

Dr. Lazaro studied 36 eyes of 30 patients who underwent LASIK after primary PRK. Follow-up was at least 12 months. He found significant differences in refraction during the follow-up period between the haze group and the no-haze group.
