Submacular surgery for the treatment of exudative age-related macular degeneration is a promising treatment, a review of published studies suggests.
Researchers in Vienna reviewed 61 studies on surgical interventions in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) published in English or German between 1992 and 2001.
The surgical procedures reported on included removal of subfoveal choroidal neovascularization in 43%, macular translocation in 25%, transplantation of pigment epithelium in 10% and removal of subretinal hemorrhage in 23%.
Of all cases reported, 38% showed an improvement in visual acuity and 26% showed a deterioration.
The analysis is published in Spektrum der Augenheilkunde.
