KOLOA, Hawaii — Although the Complications of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Prevention Trial did not achieve its primary outcome, the trial still provided valuable clinical information on dry AMD, according to a speaker here.

The CAPT studied whether prophylactic laser therapy could reduce risk of progression of choroidal neovascularization in patients with dry AMD. However, CAPT showed no difference in visual acuity scores in treated eyes and fellow untreated eyes, Andrew P. Schachat, MD, said at Retina 2010.

Within the CAPT data pool, multivariate analysis revealed that older age, cigarette smoking and focal hyperpigmentation predicted CNV progression. Risk of CNV in study patients with large bilateral drusen was 2% to 9%, but if there was CNV in the fellow eye, the risk of new CNV was 5% to 12%, Dr. Schachat said.

Because serial fundus photography was performed in the trial, post-hoc analysis of the CAPT data was also important in characterizing CNV lesions when they occurred, Dr. Schachat said. At the time of detection, 68% of lesions were occult, 54% were subfoveal and 56% were two MPS disc areas, Dr. Schachat said.

Hawaiian Eye and Retina 2011 will be held January 16-21, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa in Ka'anapali, Maui. Learn more at OSNHawaiianEye.com.
