FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. — Italian ophthalmologists have begun selecting patients to be included in a study of pneumatic trabeculoplasty (PNT) glaucoma treatment equipment, patented by Coronado Industries, based here. CIBA Vision arranged the study, in accordance with CIBA's preliminary licensing agreement with Coronado.
PNT works similarly to laser trabeculoplasty, except that it reduces intraocular pressure (IOP) mechanically rather than through burning of the trabecular meshwork. The effect is produced through the application of a suction ring that fits over the corneal limbal area above the collector channel/trabecular meshwork complex—externally. Suction is applied to the eye for a period of 1 minute to 2 minutes.
In clinical studies already conducted, the mean IOP drop was 5.5 mm Hg, where IOP ranges were 14 mm Hg to 38 mm Hg. Other conclusions to date: IOP reduction may be permanent, latanoprost patients seem especially amenable to the treatment, and the treatment may improve visual acuity in some patients.
The PNT equipment has received Europe's CE Mark, allowing Coronado to freely market the suction device throughout Europe.
