Transcaruncular plication effectively resolved lower eyelid malposition and associated symptoms caused by medial canthal ligament laxity, a study found. The technique also provided patients with good function and cosmesis, the study authors noted.
"This minimally invasive technique achieves good functional and cosmetic outcomes by re-establishing the vectorial forces for eyelid support that are normally provided by the tripartite ligament," they said.
Victor M. Elner, MD, PhD, and colleagues at the University of Michigan evaluated the long-term efficacy of the procedure in 176 eyelids of 125 patients. At 25 months' mean follow-up, 88% of the patients' preop symptoms had resolved or improved. Additionally, lower eyelid position, lagophthalmos and keratopathy all had significantly improved, according to the study.
Complications included suture breakage in two eyes and pyogenic granuloma in one eye, the authors said.
The study is published in the March issue of Archives of Ophthalmology.
