PK, sutured IOL combination offers visual benefits, study finds

BALTIMORE — Combined penetrating keratoplasty with an iris-sutured IOL offers significant visual benefits for patients, according to a retrospective case series.

Walter J. Stark, MD, and colleagues at Wilmer Eye Institute evaluated 264 eyes that had undergone penetrating keratoplasty with posterior chamber IOL implantation for aphakic and pseudophakic bullous keratopathy over the course of 10 years.

Graft survival rates were 95% at 1 year, 89% at 2 years and 81% at 5 years. Of the 191 eyes with a follow-up of at least 2 years, 72% had improved visual acuity at final follow-up from preoperative levels.

The study is published in the May issue of Ophthalmology.
