NEW YORK — The Physicians Coalition for Injectable Safety, an alliance comprised of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, and the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, has partnered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Counterfeit Alert Network, the coalition announced in a press release.

The coalition represents the first organization accepted into the network whose members are cosmetic surgeons, the release noted.

A July 2007 survey of coalition member physicians reported that 32% of all cosmetic injectable complications resulted from injections of unknown substances, according to the release.

"The goals of the counterfeit drug network parallel our goals as a coalition," Ira. D. Papel, MD, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins University and past president of AAFPRS, said in the release. "It is appropriate that we work together to disseminate information, educate consumers, physicians and all health care providers about the risks of counterfeit drugs and devices, and network to protect public health."
