Phaco with viscocanalostomy or trabeculotomy equally effective in Japanese eyes
KYOTO, Japan — Combined surgery with phaco and either viscocanalostomy or trabeculotomy was equally effective in lowering intraocular pressure in a study here.
In a nonrandomized clinical trial, researchers here compared the results in 114 eyes of Japanese patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and cataract. Fifty-seven eyes underwent viscocanalostomy with phaco and IOL implantation and were followed for more than 6 months; 57 eyes underwent trabeculotomy, phaco and IOL implantation and were followed for more than 6 months but less than 2 years.
Significant reductions in IOP and antiglaucoma medication use were seen in both groups up to 1 year postoperatively, but differences were not statistically significant between the two groups.
The study is published in the October issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology.
