NEW DELHI — Trypan blue-assisted phacoemulsification can provide an acceptable visual outcome in patients with cataracts and corneal opacities, according to a study here. Staining the anterior capsule aids in performing capsulorrhexis in eyes awaiting corneal transplant or eyes in which transplant is not feasible, the study authors said.

Eleven eyes of 11 patients with corneal opacities and cataract underwent trypan blue-assisted phaco with foldable IOL implantation. The dye improved visualization of the anterior capsule, and capsulorrhexis was successful in all eyes. In one eye with Fuchs’ dystrophy, penetrating keratoplasty was performed later. Mean visual acuity was less than 6/60 preoperatively and improved to better than 6/24 in eight eyes postoperatively.

The study is published in the August issue of British Journal of Ophthalmology.
