Phacoemulsification and a small-incision manual cataract technique produced similar intraocular pressure outcomes when combined trabeculectomy with in a small study.

Ravi Thomas, MS, and colleagues at the Prasad (India) Eye Institute retrospectively compared 78 eyes that underwent trabeculectomy in conjunction with phaco to 86 eyes that underwent trabeculectomy combined with the Blumenthal technique of manual small-incision cataract surgery. Follow-up ranged from 6 to 30 months. Eyes that underwent phaco had a mean reduction in IOP of 17.7 mm Hg. Eyes that underwent the Blumenthal technique had a mean reduction in IOP of 17.1 mm Hg.

There was no statistically significant difference in IOP reduction or achievement of target IOP between the two groups.

The study is published in the Journal of Glaucoma.
