Pediatric cataract surgery may lead to progressive axial myopia
NEW DEHLI, India Eyes of pediatric patients that undergo cataract surgery may develop progressive axial myopia, according to a study. In a case series, trauma or multiple ocular surgeries may have been predisposing factors, authors said.
Researchers here retrospectively analyzed 12 children who had developed progressive ipsilateral axial myopia following unilateral cataract surgery. Follow-up ranged from 4 to 14 years. Mean age of the patient at time of surgery was 6.7 years. Ten of the 12 patients had traumatic cataracts, and two had suffered blunt trauma. Three children had aphakia, and nine had pseudophakia.
The degree of myopic shift ranged from -4.75 D to -15 D. Mean axial length increase from preop to final follow-up was 2.53 mm. Three children had to undergo IOL explantation, and one had posterior chamber IOL exchange because of high unilateral myopia.
The study is published in the Journal of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
