NEW YORK — Photodynamic therapy with verteporfin may be beneficial for treating subfoveal idiopathic choroidal neovascular lesions, a small study here indicates.

Eight eyes of eight patients with subfoveal idiopathic CNV who were 55 years old or younger underwent photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin.

Mean follow-up was 13.5 months. Visual acuity improved in five eyes, remained unchanged in one and decreased in two. The mean acuity improvement was 3.6 Snellen lines, a statistically significant change. No patient had complications from the treatment.

Because there is no widely accepted method for treating subfoveal idiopathic CNV, the study authors suggest further study of the PDT approach is indicated.

The study is published in the July issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology.
