PDT may be effective for circumscribed choroidal hemangioma

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Photodynamic therapy is a promising new treatment for circumscribed choroidal hemangioma, according to researchers here. It restores visual function in most cases without causing ocular or systemic side effects, a study found.

Irène Landau and others here at St. Erik’s Eye Hospital treated eight patients who had circumscribed choroidal hemangioma (CCH) with photodynamic therapy using a protocol similar to the standard treatment for patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

Visual acuity improved in six of eight eyes, remained unchanged in one eye and deteriorated in one eye after a follow-up of between 3 and 15 months. Pretreatment metamorphopsia disappeared in all but two cases. After the PDT therapy, CCH thickness showed marked regression within 1 month.

The study is published in the October issue of Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavica.
