PDT for hemangioma may resolve serous retinal detachment

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Photodynamic therapy may be effective in managing circumscribed choroidal hemangioma and accompanying serous retinal detachments, according to results of a small case series.

Researchers here treated two patients with PDT who had circumscribed, posteriorly located choroidal hemangiomas accompanied by serous detachments of the sensory retina. A third patient was also treated with PDT; this patient had a circumscribed subfoveal hemangioma and a prominent serous retinal detachment.

Serous retinal detachments resolved in all eyes, and the choroidal hemangioma in each of the eyes regressed to a nonmeasureable thickness within 2 to 5 months. Visual acuity improved in all eyes as well. The tumors had not recurred at follow-up visits from 11 to 16 months, according to researchers.

The study is published in the September issue of Archives of Ophthalmology.
