With strict attention to control of inflammation, patients with uveitis can maintain good vision in the long term after cataract extraction and IOL implantation, according to a study in England.

I. Rahman and N.P. Jones at The Royal Eye Hospital in Manchester retrospectively evaluated the long term visual results in 72 eyes of 61 patients that underwent cataract extraction and IOL implantation at a tertiary uveitis referral clinic. Stringent attention was paid to perioperative and postoperative control of inflammation, the study authors said.

After a mean of 7 years and 7 months, 82% of the eyes maintained a visual improvement of two Snellen lines, 74% maintained a VA of 6/9 or better and 14% had a VA of 6/18 or worse. Macular edema or scarring was present in 24% of the eyes, posterior capsular opacification in 96% and glaucoma drainage in 15%.

No ongoing complication was attributed to IOL implantation, the study authors said.

The study is published in the February edition of Eye.
