Patients prefer block to topical anesthesia for cataract surgery, study finds
When given the choice of four anesthesia management strategies, almost three-quarters of participants in a study preferred block to topical anesthesia, researchers reported. In addition, more patients in the study preferred oral sedation over intravenous sedation.
David S. Friedman, MD, MPH, and colleagues at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore noted that the results of their cross-sectional clinic-based study indicated that patients may prefer anesthesia strategies other than those currently being offered.
Patients in the study rated their preferences of anesthesia management strategies using a linear rating scale from 0 to 100. The researchers found that participants preferred block to topical anesthesia and oral to intravenous sedation by about 8 points.
The study is published in the February issue of the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
