Acceptable success rates can be achieved using pars plana vitrectomy alone to treat rhegmatogenous retinal detachments with inferior breaks, according to a study.
A. Sharma and colleagues at St. Thomass Hospital in London studied 48 patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) associated with inferior breaks and 48 age- and sex-matched controls with RRD not associated with inferior breaks. All patients underwent standard pars plana vitrectomy. Exclusion criteria included giant retinal tears, proliferative vitreoretinopathy of grade B or higher and previous surgery to treat RRD.
Of those with inferior breaks, 39 (81.3%) were treated successfully with one operation. Of those without inferior breaks serving as controls, 41 (85.4%) achieved primary success. The final success rate was 95.8% in both groups.
The study is published in the November issue of British Journal of Ophthalmology.
