Overnight corneal reshaping lenses were preferred by more than two-thirds of study participants over 2-week disposable contact lenses.

Michael J. Lipson, OD, FAAO, and colleagues randomly assigned 65 participants to wear one mode of contact lens for 8 weeks and then, after a washout period, had them switch the type of lens for an additional 8 weeks. The patients wore the soft contact lenses only during the day and the overnight corneal reshaping lenses only at night.

Significant differences favoring soft contact lens wear included better visual acuity and less trouble with glare. Significant differences favoring the overnight corneal reshaping lens wear included less activity limitations, less trouble with symptoms and less dependence on refractive correction. Overall, 44 patients preferred the overnight lenses while 21 preferred the soft lenses.

The study is published in the October issue of Optometry and Vision Science.
