Overactive vertical rectus muscle may lead to strabismus
SEOUL, Korea Permanent vertical strabismus after local anesthesia was directly related to overactive vertical rectus muscles, according to a small study.
Soo Kyung Han, MD, and colleagues here with Seoul Municipal Boramae Hospital performed a prism and cover test in 11 patients with vertical rectus overaction after retrobulbar anesthesia. None of the patients had reported diplopia before anesthesia. Of the 11 patients, 10 showed ipsilateral hypertropia with superior rectus overaction and one showed hypotropia with inferior rectus overaction. Half the patients who underwent a thyroid function test had abnormal findings and one had a history of systemic dysthyroidism.
The study is published in the January issue of Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
