OSN Symposium offers updates on treatments, techniques
The annual OSN New York meeting will feature programs on the latest technologies and treatment options available for the care of cataract, refractive, glaucoma and retina patients.
The Ocular Surgery News Symposium on Cataract, Glaucoma and Refractive Surgery returns this year with comprehensive symposia designed for both the general and subspecialty ophthalmologist.
Program director Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, and course moderators Louis D. Nichamin, MD, Timothy W. Olsen, MD, Robert H. Osher, MD, and Thomas W. Samuelson, MD, have tailored this year’s meeting to include new, updated and interactive programs to improve both patient care and practice management. This year’s symposia also include a full retina program on the treatment and management of retinal diseases and a panel discussion on new technology.
“It’s the perfect meeting for the comprehensive ophthalmologist to get an update on all the cutting-edge technologies in the fields of cataract, refractive and glaucoma,” Dr. Lindstrom said.
Cataract surgery
The 2-day meeting will start Saturday, Sept. 11, with the Cataract Surgery Session, moderated by Dr. Lindstrom, OSN chief medical editor. This session will include three different presentations by Dr. Lindstrom and William W. Culbertson, MD, on bimanual microincision phacoemulsification, including the three-port method, difficult cases and the advantages and disadvantages of the procedure.
Other presentation topics include tips and tricks for transitioning to microincision cataract surgery, surgical prophylaxis, strategies for the prevention of CME after cataract surgery and managing complications with the capsular tension ring.
Speakers in this session include Rosa Braga-Mele, MD, Edward E. Manche, MD, John D. Hunkeler, MD, Kerry D. Solomon, MD, and Dr. Osher.
Refractive cataract
After a break, the meeting will continue with the Refractive Cataract Session moderated by Dr. Nichamin. William F. Maloney, MD, OSN Cataract Surgery Section Editor and writer of the monthly OSN Lens-Based Refractive Surgery column, will kick off this session with his keynote lecture, Surgical Correction of Presbyopia Using Lens Implants.
Dr. Maloney’s lecture will be followed by presentations by Steven J. Dell, MD, Jeffrey D. Horn, MD, and others on IOL calculations for refractive lens exchange, limbal relaxing incisions, bioptics and more.
Guy E. Knolle Jr., MD, FACS, and Dr. Solomon will discuss multifocal IOLs in their respective presentations, Patient and Surgeon Satisfaction with the Array Multifocal IOL and Update on the ReStor Multifocal IOL. After the multifocal IOL presentations, Dr. Dell will discuss how to add the accommodating IOL to a practice.
Dr. Lindstrom will wrap up the session with his presentation, LASIK vs. Phakic IOL vs. Refractive Lensectomy: An Evidence-based Analysis.
New technology
The meeting will reconvene after lunch with New Technology: Exploring the Future, moderated by Dr. Osher. In this session, Alan S. Crandall, MD, Richard Tipperman, MD, and Drs. Lindstrom and Solomon will hold a panel discussion on the latest technological advances in the industry and their implications for the future of ophthalmology.
Retina
Dr. Olsen will moderate the Retina Session, which includes presentations on age-related macular degeneration, photodynamic therapy, retinal vein occlusion and diabetes. Speakers in this session include Richard Spaide, MD, Jason S. Slakter, MD, and Michael S. Ip, MD.
Tom S. Chang, MD, will close the session with his presentation, Why You Need to Know About Quality of Life Measures for Patients with Retinal Disease. Various workshops will follow the sessions.
Glaucoma
Day 2 will begin with the Glaucoma Session moderated by Dr. Samuelson. This session of symposia is packed with several presentations, including discussions on glaucoma imaging, IOP measurement, SLT, trabeculectomy, endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation and more.
The session will also include a point/counterpoint session and two panel discussions. Richard K. Parrish, MD, and Ronald L. Gross, MD, will debate the issue, Is There a Difference Among the Prostanoid Drugs?
The first panel discussion, Medical and Laser Therapy for Glaucoma, will include participation by Alan L. Robin, MD, L. Jay Katz, MD, and Drs. Parrish and Gross. The second panel discussion will be a wrap-up discussion of surgical therapy for glaucoma. Panelists for this discussion are Leon W. Herndon, MD, Stanley Burke, MD, and Drs. Parrish and Crandall.
Harry A. Quigley, MD, will start the glaucoma session with his keynote lecture, Major New Issues in Clinical Management of Glaucoma.
Wavefront technology
After brunch, the Sunday symposia will continue with the Wavefront Technology Session, moderated by Dr. Lsindstrom. Steven C. Schallhorn, MD, will give the keynote lecture, Custom Surface Ablation: Is It Better than Custom LASIK.
Discussions in this session include LASIK results with wavefront technology by Elizabeth A Davis, MD; Comparative Study: Custom Ablation by Dr. Solomon; and Wavefront IOL by Mark Packer, MD.
Refractive
The Refractive Session, moderated by Dr. Lindstrom, will follow, with presentations by Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, Sheri Rowen, MD, FACS, Glen Strauss, MD, and others.
Symposia topics in this session include microkeratomes, IntraLase, phakic IOLs, a clinical update on implantable contact lens, IOLs for refractive lens exchange, LASIK and conductive keratoplasty. There will also be a presentation on stimulating the cornea by J.E. McDonald II, MD, called CLAPIKS and Beyond, Stimulating the Cornea to Recontour Itself.
