OSN summit brings together leaders in ophthalmology, industry

Top thinkers in ophthalmology bring their cutting-edge knowledge and expertise to bear in the ‘Subspecialty Challenge.’

It is not every day we have the chance to gather some of the top minds in ophthalmology, and put them in a room with leaders in industry for a weekend to have an unscripted and frank discussion about the major issues confronting the specialty.

Yet Ocular Surgery News has sought to do just that with its annual OSN Section Editors Summit. The editors and publishers of OSN have made it a priority to gather these thought leaders in Las Vegas each year and to bring down the curtain between ophthalmologists and industry by inviting each sector to listen to and join in one another’s discussions.

The event also affords OSN the unique opportunity, not only to observe these discussions, but also to turn the table and invite feedback on the publication, as well as on ideas that might make for great editorial content.

Subspecialty Challenge

Some of the most valuable editorial ideas that emerge from these talks come from a portion of the weekend we call “Subspecialty Challenge,” in which we invite the Section Editors from the OSN Editorial Board to present on topics they feel represent the most cutting-edge news or developments in their respective subspecialties.

The idea is for them to speak candidly about the techniques or technologies they predict have the potential to dramatically impact the way they practice. Many of these ideas are ones that not everyone is discussing on the podium at major meetings, but ones with which only a select few have intimate knowledge.

Their talks represent the latest and greatest in clinical ophthalmology. Far from abstract academic notions, they focus on practical applications of some of the most advanced technology available or new therapeutic horizons that we are just starting to explore.

In this supplement you’ll hear from: Contact Lenses Section Editor Penny A. Asbell, MD, FACS, MBA, on new materials and designs in contact lenses; Retina/Vitreous Section Editor Carmen A. Puliafito, MD, MBA, on emerging therapies for wet AMD; Glaucoma Section Editor Thomas S. Samuelson, MD, on alternative approaches to trabeculectomy; Pediatrics/Strabismus Section Editor Robert S. Gold, MD, on telemedicine screening for ROP; Oculoplastics Section Member Julian D. Perry, MD, on the benefits of periocular reflation; Cornea/External Disease Editor Emeritus Kenneth R. Kenyon, MD, on trends in nonbacterial contact lens-related infections; new Cornea/External Disease Section Editor Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, FACS, on innovations in corneal therapeutics; Optics Section Editor Jack T. Holladay, MD, MSEE, FACS, on advances in optics leading to better visual results; Refractive Surgery Section Editor Daniel S. Durrie, MD, on thin-flap LASIK; Cataract Surgery Section Member Uday Devgan, MD, FACS, on refractive lens exchange; and ASCs Section Editor R. Bruce Wallace III, MD, FACS, on ASC benchmarking.

State of the industry

Besides these clinical insights, OSN Practice Management Section Editor John B. Pinto offers his bird’s eye view of the industry, discussing shifting demographics in ophthalmology, the economy and the upcoming presidential election’s impact on health care, among other subjects.

John’s talk is one of the highlights each year at the Section Editors Summit, as he provides a “megatrends update” of eye care projections.

Also in this supplement, you will find an article by Regulatory/Legislative Section Editor Alan E. Reider, JD, on Recovery Audit Contractors, lending his legal expertise to a subject that could affect us all.

Finally, look for a lively round table discussion from the panel of industry participants to appear in the April 25 issue of Ocular Surgery News.
