OSHA rejects medical resident work hours petition
WASHINGTON A government agency has rejected a petition to restrict the work hours of medical residents to fewer than 100 per week, according to a news release issued by Public Citizen, one of the petitioners.
In a letter to Public Citizen, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration denied the petition, citing voluntary standards being adopted by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The petition had called for a mandatory 80-hour work week, 1 day off per week and work shifts of no longer than 24 hours.
The petition had been filed by Public Citizen, the American Medical Student Association and the Committee of Interns and Residents.
