SAN DIEGO — Although ectasia management should be avoided when possible, several management options do exist, including collagen cross-linking, according to one presenter here.

"We feel that collagen cross-linking maintains a place in ophthalmic management as an effective means for stabilization of ectasia," A. John Kanellopoulos, MD, said in an update on ectasia management during Cornea Day preceding the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting. "I also feel that higher-fluence, shorter-pulsed UV light on the cornea will be innovations for the future."

Dr. Kanellopoulos also presented findings from the Athens protocol study, which looked at simultaneous topography-guided partial PRK with corneal collagen cross-linking. The study's long-term follow-up data demonstrated that such treatment offers a stable, safe and effective approach for normalizing the cornea and enhancing visual function in eyes with ectasia, according to Dr. Kanellopoulos. Intracorneal rings and phakic IOLs may also be considered adjunctive solutions, he said.
