An anonymous questionnaire revealed most responding ophthalmologists utilize empiric therapy with newer fluoroquinolone antibiotics for corneal ulcers, but comprehensive ophthalmologists and cornea specialists were found to disagree on the efficacy of the drugs.
Of the 629 usable questionnaires returned from ophthalmologists in California, Florida, Illinois and Missouri, both comprehensive ophthalmologists and cornea specialists reported performing Gram stains and corneal cultures only some of the time, with corneal cultures being the more common practice.
A total of 88.8% of comprehensive ophthalmologists and 76% of cornea specialists initiate treatment with newer fluoroquinolone antibiotics, the study found. However, 41% of cornea specialists and only 12.1% of comprehensive ophthalmologists indicated they opt for fortified antibiotics.
"Larger, more detailed surveys and more specific analyses would help to further establish the factors that lead to differing management choices and opinions," the study authors concluded.
