SAN FRANCISCO — The first Ophthalmology Innovation Summit was held here prior to the start of the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting and served as a forum for small companies to showcase new innovations before investors and key industry leaders.

The first-time event was the brainchild of conference co-chairs Emmett T. Cunningham Jr., MD, PhD, MPH, and William J. Link, PhD. Twenty-five small companies presented innovative ophthalmology technologies in various stages of development for a cutting-edge program.

In addition to the presentations of the companies, other industry leaders participated in panel discussions on topics from views of the private and public sector, financing of ophthalmic device and pharmaceutical companies, and what established pharmaceutical and device companies are looking for in smaller companies.

The event was highlighted by presentations on anterior segment innovations in the next 5 years by Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, and posterior segment innovations in the next 5 years by Mark Blumenkranz, MD.
