Three ophthalmologists seeking seats in Congress lost their elections yesterday, according to local sources.

In New Jersey, Republican-turned-Democrat Anne Sumers, MD, lost to a conservative state lawmaker.

In Pennsylvania, Melissa Brown, MD, failed to unseat the incumbent after waging what local papers deemed a bitter campaign.

In Louisiana, John Cooksey, MD, lost in his attempt to become the only ophthalmologist ever elected to the U.S. Senate. Dr. Cooksey gave up his House seat in order to run his Senate campaign. He now plans to return to his private practice in Monroe, according to The Times-Picayune.
